Allen C. Dotson was born into a family in which the father was an industrial chemist and his older brother would become a mathematics instructor at the university level, so it is not surprising that he turned out to teach physics at that same level.

After obtaining a PhD degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he joined the physics department at Western Michigan University, thinking to stay up North about four years. Seventeen (!) years later, he said goodbye to those frigid winters and accepted a position back in North Carolina at St. Andrews College (which soon became St. Andrews University).

In those years up North, his religious perspective had become more liberal. In fact, he had spent one academic year on a leave of absence, studying at a liberally inclined seminary. So, it is also not surprising that, after teaching physics at St. Andrews for about three decades, he started writing this book.
